Bridges is an educational program developed by the staff at Westside. It was decided that there should be a program to service students who are having difficulty with attendance and academic performance. Many high school students struggle with being successful and are possible dropouts. Bridges is designed as an intervention program for students starting high school. The goal of Bridges is to eventually transition the student into a regular program.
The guidlelines for Bridges are very strict. The student must attend school four days a week for one and a half hours per session and do 20 hours of homework per week. The student must also complete one semester credit, .5, every three weeks. If, for any reason, the student cannot come to class, the student must make contact with the teacher on the day of absence. If they don't, they may be dropped immediately.
Bridges was started in 2006 after three years of planning. The program was presented to the school board and accepted. The first year running, Bridges transitioned four out of nine students. All five students who did not transition dropped from the program before they were eligible for transition.
Students who wish to consider the Bridges program are encouraged to call WSHS at 509-663-7947. Students who are considered for admission to Bridges must interview with the Principal. Admission is not automatic. A true desire to be successful in school must be shown by the student. Upon admission, the student will sign a contract agreeing to the conditions of continued participation in the program. Our goal is to make the student's decision to be in school a useful one.
Thank you for considering WSHS Bridges.
