  • Welcome

Welcome to WestSide High School. WestSide High School was established in the fall of 1985, with 65 students and 5 staff members. Since that time we have grown to an enrollment of over 250 students. For more information on the history of WestSide, click on the link WestSide's Story either here or on the sidebar.

WestSide High School is a fully accredited high school and is unique in many ways. Many of its graduates continue their education at colleges and universities; some enter the armed forces; others enter vocational programs while others directly enter the work force.

    Our Purpose

The mission of WestSide High School is to enable young adults to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society. It is important that students receive an excellent education that prepares them for the real world through learned attitudes, habits and behaviors as well as academic preparation. To this end, much of our program focuses upon each student taking social and personal responsibility for his or her education and relationships with others. To be successful, students must commit themselves to the goal of attaining a high school education. The staff is committed to helping each and every student reach this goal.

    Staff

    Programs at WestSide

Several programs exist at WestSide to meet the educational needs of our students. Descriptions of these programs may be found on the "about WestSide" page under the heading "about..WestSide Programs".

It should be remembered that WestSide High School is a school of choice. When you enroll, you are entering into a contract with the school that you will meet the school's behavioral, academic and attendance expectations and requirements to remain in school. Students who not meet the terms of the contract will be dropped from school. Specific behavioral, attendance and academic requirements are found on the pages of this handbook.

    Eligibility and the Enrollment Process

WestSide High School is a school of choice with limited enrollment. Because of facility limitations we are not able to accept more than 150 students into the Day Program, 75 students into the Night Program, and 30 students into the English as a Second Language Program. There is usually a waiting list, and students are admitted monthly as space becomes available. To enroll, students must be between 14 and 21 years of age. Student applications are reviewed on a monthly basis and new students are accepted and enrolled at the end of each month

Complete information about eligibility and the enrollment process can be found on the page "about WestSide" under the heading Eligibility and Enrollment.

    Student Information

    Academic Progress

School is organized on a non-graded continuous progress concept. This means that students can work and earn credit at their own pace. Students earn credit in .25 increments by completing their work with a B or better average. It is not unusual for students to complete more than a year's work during the year. The school closely monitors each student's progress and makes every effort to work with students and keep parents well informed. State law requires that students who do not make "reasonable progress" be dropped from our program. They are not eligible to reenroll for at least one quarter.

    Student Activities

Students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities which are available to all students. Students may participate in activities at either WestSide or Wenatchee High School, provided that they meet eligibility requirements, are in good standing at WestSide, and have purchased a WSHS activity card.

    Athletic Program

Students may participate in the WestSide athletic program. Depending on interest and availability of competition, we offer coed volleyball in the fall, boy's and girl's basketball in the winter and coed softball during the spring. To participate, students must be in good standing, meet district guidelines and have proof of medical insurance, and purchase a WSHS ASB activity card.

    Student Government

WestSide High School is your school. All students are eligible to participate in student government through the leadership class. This class is scheduled as one of the options for a family. In this class, students make decisions about school activities, the student ASB budget, and community projects.

    Families

Each student will be scheduled into a family with a teacher who will serve as the student's advisor for the year. The purpose of the family is to provide each student with a positive caring environment where the student can find support to help them reach their educational goals. The focus of each family is different and is organized around an activity such as the school annual or student government. Students may earn .25 credits per semester by fully participating in the family.

    Open/Closed Campus

Our campus is closed during the school day except during lunch, when students may leave. Once your arrive at school, you must check out in the office if you are going to leave except during lunch. Visitors are allowed on school grounds for school business and must check in to the office when they arrive on campus.

    Smoking

The use and possession of tobacco products by students is prohibited by law on school property or in school facilities. Students who leave the campus to use tobacco during the school day, except during lunch, or who congregate or loiter adjacent to school property before school, during lunch or after school are in violation of district policy. The penalty for the first offense is 5 days suspension, 10 days for the second offense, and 90 days for the third offense. The suspension may be shortened by enrollment and attendance in a tobacco cessation program.

    Lunch Program

The Wenatchee School District lunch program is available to students. Free or reduced lunches are available to students who qualify. Forms are provided when you enroll in school or available at the office. The price for the student lunch is $1.80 full price and $.40 reduced price. Milk is $.35. Prices are subject to change.

    Telephone

A student telephone is located in the lobby for personal calls. It may be used during student breaks. School phones may be used by students only for emergencies or school business with staff permission.

    Student Conduct

You cannot interfere with the learning opportunities of others or act or dress in such a way that it threatens or intimidates others. You cannot engage in activities that are harmful or dangerous to yourself or others. You must follow the rules established by the Wenatchee School Board. Failure to do so will lead to disciplinary action that may include suspension or expulsion form school.

    Student Dress

District policy restricts student clothing when a health or safety hazard is presented by the student's dress or appearance, damage to school property or injury to others could result for the student's dress; or when a material and substantial disruption of the educational process will result from the students' dress of appearance. In addition, the policy prohibits clothing that displays obscene, sexual, drug or alcohol-related messages, gang-related apparel, or dress of the opposite sex. District dress standards prohibit the wearing of any head covering. This includes, but is not limited to, hats, bandanas, scarfs, hairnets, etc. Clothing articles that inappropriately reveal body areas of the shoulder, back, chest, waist and upper thighs are prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, tank tops, halter tops, midriff shirts, skirts and shorts above mid-thigh, cutoffs which are not hemmed, exposed underwear/undergarments, holes in clothing exposing inappropriate body areas. Clothing and/or other accessories that would be considered a safety hazard or could result in injury to the individual or others, and would be considered a disruption to the learning environment are prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to sharp protruding objects affixed to necklaces, collars, bracelets and rings, sunglasses, portable cassette/CD players and headphones.

    Day Care

Day care is provided for students with children between the ages of one month and two years. The Day Care Program is part of the Home and Family Life Program. Mothers and/or fathers who utilize the day care program are required to enroll in the Parenting class. The program is staffed by Wenatchee School District para professionals.

    Transportation

School bus transportation is provided for all student living in the Wenatchee School District. Parking is provided for students who wish to drive to school. Students under 18 years of age must have written permission to ride with students during the school day. Cars are off limits during the school day.

    Health Information

As required by State Law, students who do not comply with immunization requirements may not attend school. All prescription medications must be housed in the school office and can be administered only with written permission from the student's parent or guardian. This also applies to non prescription medication.

    Communicable Diseases

For the well being of all, parents are expected to notify the school when their children have contracted a communicable disease.

    Emancipated Student

The school is responsible to report your attendance and academic progress to your parent or guardian. At age 18 you and your parent may file a form with the school that eliminates the school's responsibility to report to the parent.

    Student Records

The Family Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, establishes the parent's right to inspect, review and correct their child's educational records. Parents should make the request to review their child's records through the principal.

    Teacher Assistance

Teachers are available for conference and to provide help for students before and after school

    Student Supplies

Students are expected to arrive to class prepared with paper, pen, pencil and other supplies as needed.

    Student Schedules

Schedules are arranged by the student's counselor when the student enrolls in school. Schedules may be reviewed and changed at the end of each quarter or when the student has earned at least .50 credit or completed the graduation requirement for that particular subject.

    Campus Upkeep

WSHS students and staff take pride in the condition of our facility. It is our responsibility to maintain the campus and classrooms. Please use the trash can and recycle bins that have been placed on campus. The custodian is not your mother and is not responsible to pick up after you.

    The Campus

The Wenatachee School District owns the property between Fifth Street and Ninth Street. This includes the soccer field, the college dormitory and the two WestSide High School buildings. The first building houses office, academic and kitchen facilities. The second building houses Physical Education and the Evenstart Program
