In a survey taken in 1984 approximately 300 young people were not in school and our community saw a need for these students to have another chance. The school district focused on developing a program to fill the gap and hence the Wenatchee Valley Alternative High School opened its doors in the fall of 1985. The first year the school was housed at the YWCA with an enrollment of fifty students. With a small staff and limited offerings, our high school experienced a successful beginning.
The fall of 1986 found the school in a new location. The school district purchased and renovated a college dormitory adjacent to the campus of Wenatchee Valley College. The new site provided stability, more space for students, and an increased staff to fill the needs of the growing school. The Night School Program was instituted in January of 1991 with the goal to provide opportunities for juniors and seniors who had jobs during the day. English as a Second Language was offered as a Night School Program beginning in September of 1992.
In 1993 the school name was changed to WestSide High School. This change indicates how the school has evolved as a school of choice for students seeking to earn their high school diploma in a unique educational setting. The staff at WestSide currently includes fifteen certificated personel as well as seven support staff. |
